Principal conductor of the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Yan Pascal Tortelier enjoys a distinguished career as a guest with the world’s most prestigious orchestras. He has impressed audiences with “suave phrasing, unforced rhythmic control, and a vein of forthright but soft-spoken eloquence” (San Francisco Chronicle). Tortelier’s specialties, French and English music, are on display in this program, which showcases the charming loveliness of Ravel’s suite, Dutilleux’s mysterious sound world, and Elgar’s captivating, and puzzling, musical portraits.
