The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields performs fresh, brilliant interpretations of the world’s most loved classical music. Founded by Sir Neville Marriner in 1958, his vision and inspiration keep the Academy sound and spirit alive. Now led by Music Director Joshua Bell and the membership of the orchestra, the Academy create an annual program of inspirational and inventive performances. The orchestra traverses the globe, playing in a huge variety of venues from church halls to the grandest concert halls in Europe.
Often referred to as the “poet of the violin,” Joshua Bell’s stunning virtuosity, beautiful tone and charismatic stage presence have brought him universal acclaim. An Avery Fisher Prize recipient, Bell recently received the New York Recording Academy Honors. As a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor, Bell has recorded more than 40 CDs garnering Grammy®, Mercury, Gramophone and Echo Klassik awards.
The program also features a curiosity in the form of the second movement of Schumann’s Violin Concerto, with an added codetta by Benjamin Britten. Reworked as an Elegy in memory of legendary British horn player Dennis Brain, it was discovered by Steven Isserlis in the Britten archives and has not been performed since 1958.
