State Street Ballet’s 2016-17 Season opens with an homage to the Jazz Age and two of the ballroom era’s most popular dancers, Frank and Yolanda Veloz. Featuring music by Waller, Gershwin, Ellington, and others, and based on a script by Guy Veloz, this multi-media dance/theatre production was hailed by the Montecito Journal as “an entertaining theatrical tour-de-force,” and by Steven Woodruff (seedance.com) as “a heartfelt and visually appealing production for the stage by one of America’s vibrant, chamber ballet companies.”

Choreographer and director William Soleau uses an on-stage narrator to tell the story of Veloz and Yolanda and deliver commentary, set against a backdrop of multimedia designs and special effects that take you from the streets of New York to the stage of the Hollywood Bowl. But it’s the big dancing moments that steal the show, from the pas-de-deux set to Piazzolla’s tango nocturne, Oblivion, to the nostalgic video of Frank and Yolanda as their love story plays out in the final scene.

Examiner.com calls An American Tango “a must-see production for anyone who loves dance.” Don’t miss the entrancing theatrical debut of this performance on The Granada’s magnificent stage!
