The New York Philharmonic, the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, was founded in 1842. Its 20th Century roster of Music Directors is perhaps the richest and most distinguished in the world including Mahler, Mengelberg, Walter, Toscanini, Rodzinsky, Stokowski, Mitropoulos, Bernstein (Conductor Laureate), Mehta, Masur (Conductor Emeritus) and Maazel. In the 2009-10 season, Alan Gilbert assumed the post of music director. “Gilbert is primed to become a luminary of the city's cultural life — not just because {he is} the first native New Yorker, the first Asian-American, and one of the youngest people to direct {the orchestra}, but because he could lead a quiet revolution.” (New York Magazine)
