Mozart’s legendary genius is on full display in The Magic Flute, his final and most beguiling opera. Simultaneously profound and whimsical, this metaphysical fairytale dazzles on every level. Its varied music is glorious. Its diverse characters are engaging and vivid. As it progresses from the dark of night to sun-splashed radiance, its account of the quest for love, wisdom, and goodness both uplifts and entertains. The Music Academy of the West’s new production of The Magic Flute is directed by David Paul, who gave us 2012’s superb Rake’s Progress; his other credits include work for Juilliard, North Carolina Opera, and Washington National Opera. Faculty artist Warren Jones, conductor of 2011’s The Barber of Seville, will return to the podium. The scenic designer is Charlie Corcoran, whose credits include a recent Juilliard+Met production of Cosi Fan Tutte and Santa Fe Opera’s 2014 Fidelio.
