MOVIES THAT MATTER with Hal Conklin
In collaboration with the Lights On Jail Ministry
In this masterfully told tale, we travel a journey with people who could be our mother, sister, brother, son. Their experiences are shared with such simple insight that we soon forget they are creations of fiction. Instead they become people woven into the fabric of our own experience. The complexity of the themes of the film mirror the complexity of our lives. Life, death, sorrow, hope, discovery, loss, betrayal, loyalty, chance, confession, forgiveness, loneliness, and love are all genuinely presented. The central character is a young woman whose life has guarded a grieving wound. Imprisoned for manslaughter, Perchance (Percy) Talbot has the dream of a new life: a life in which she can find a place safe enough to heal her wound. Her choice is Gilead in the beautiful hills of Maine. Like the Biblical city of the same name which was known for its healing balm, Percy is seeking a place with people who will love her and give her a chance to begin again. Under the care of the local Sheriff responsible for her parole, she becomes the live-in waitress for Hannah (Ellen Burstyn). Hannah is the owner of the only restaurant in town called the “Spitfire Grill.”
(1996) 117 minutes PG-13
LIGHTS ON JAIL MINISTRY – In 2014 a local men’s ministry called Believer’s Edge entered into a contract with the Santa Barbara Sherriff’s Department to receive discharged inmates from 10 PM-1 AM in the evening and help them transition to their destination. It’s been aptly named the ‘Lights On’ project. As men and women are released through the doors of the jail, they are pleasantly surprised and greeted by men who are offering coffee, snacks, and the use of a cell phone. Many leave jail disheveled and disoriented when they are released from jail and often they have just a few pennies in their pocket. Lights On goes a long way in helping the broken and the marginalized of our society in restoring their dignity and identity as children of God. Volunteers serve one night per month, Monday – Thursday 10:00 pm to 1:00 am. For information, please contact Hank Bowis at (805) 963-0975 or hbowis@cox.net.
