The Granada Theatre Presents
Say Amen Somebody
MOVIES THAT MATTER with Hal Conklin
In collaboration with the Inner Light Gospel Choir

This documentary is a remarkably compelling look at the colorful history of Gospel music singing in the United States. Never before has it been captured so infectiously on film, and it features some of the earliest founders of this form of praise that was born in the small Midwestern traditions of the African American church. The story touches on the real life experiences of early unknown singers including Willie Mae Ford Smith and Thomas A. Dorsey whose lament “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” sung at his wife and daughters’ funeral became one of the greatest Gospel songs of all time. In the words of the late Roger Ebert (At the Movies); “It’s terrific, joyous, funny, and unabashedly emotional. I’ve been lucky enough to see it three times. It’s one of the happiest movies in a long, long time. There is no way that I can recommend it any more highly.” Many of legends of modern music such as Whitney Houston got their start, experience, poise, and grace in the Gospel choirs of the black church in America.

Enjoy a special performance before the movie screening by the Inner Light Gospel Choir! Inner Light Gospel Choir was founded in 1980 by Bishop Mama Pat Patrick. It was her belief that the messages in the gospel songs were for everyone to sing and to hear. Mama Pat founded Inner Light Choir for anyone and everyone who has the desire to sing!
