The Letters
MOVIES THAT MATTER with Hal Conklin
In collaboration with the Old Mission Santa Barbara

This story gives us an insight into the spiritual foundation, strengths and struggles of Mother Teresa of Calcutta (India). Raised in a strong Christian (Catholic) background, we follow her struggles to know that her path is the inspired direction that God has for her life. All of this is told on the eve of her consideration and ultimate rise to sainthood within the Catholic tradition in 2016. In 1946, Mother Teresa received the inspiration to found the Missionaries of Charity in response to Christ’s plea that she make Him known to the poorest of the poor by her humble service of love. She envisioned a congregation of women and received her first companion in March 1949. The “little Society” of twelve members was officially established on October 7, 1950. Over the next half century, her ministry became one of the greatest symbols of sacrificial love on the planet. And yet, Mother Teresa struggled throughout her life in her faith which she expressed in letters to her closest advisor and priest. The compelling honesty and humility of her letters becomes the basis of this story, and ultimately added to the consideration of her rise to sainthood.

OLD MISSION SANTA BARBARA / Fr. Larry Gosselin, ofm, parish pastor – The Santa Barbara Mission was established on the Feast of Saint Barbara, December 4, 1786 and was the tenth of twenty-one California Missions to be founded by the Spanish Franciscans. More than 200 years later, the Mission continues to be the chief cultural and historic landmark in the city of Santa Barbara. Home to a community of Franciscan friars, a beautiful church with a large and active parish; a museum and gift shop; a cemetery and mausoleum; and twelve acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. The Mission’s commanding position and grand proportions, graceful lines and soft, blending colors all reinforce her title, “Queen of the Missions.” Santa Barbara Parish is the only one of the original California Missions that has been in continuous use as a church since its founding.
