Heroes Take Their Stand

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the Grammy Award-winning Silkroad Ensemble will perform the world premiere of a bold new project,Heroes Take Their Stands. This evening-length multimedia program tells the stories of five heroic figures from diverse cultures – from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to Elektra of Greek mythology, to Arjuna of Hindu epic poetry – capturing the drama of the moral borderland between conflicting values, and asking, “What does it mean to take a stand in a moment of moral uncertainty? What does an everyday hero look like? And how can an ordinary person make a difference?” Arts & Lectures is thrilled to be the lead commissioner on this new project with the renowned Silkroad Ensemble and its collaborating partners, including Bharatanatyam dancer/choreographer Aparna Ramaswamy (working with Colin Jacobsen) and puppeteer/filmmaker Hamid Rahmanian (working with Kayhan Kalhor).

SHAKE THE SPIRIT TOUR
with opening act Barns Courtney

Elle King’s second studio album SHAKE THE SPIRIT was released in the fall of 2018 to critical acclaim and massive radio success. Lead single “Shame” topped the Triple A Radio chart at #1 for two consecutive weeks, and with her fourth radio #1 single “Shame,” Elle became the only act in history to have scored #1s on all 4 radio formats. Jon Pareles of The New York Times describes Elle as “a sassy, hard-drinking, love-’em-and-leave-’em hellion with bad tattoos and a broad pedigree across rock, pop and country. She has Adele’s determination and Joan Jett’s stomp, Brenda Lee’s high-voiced bite and some AC/DC shriek.” Her debut album Love Stuff, a sultry, badass mix of rock and roll, blues, and country, with a twinge of pop, was released in February 2015. Her breakthrough single “Ex’s & Oh’s,” propelled Elle into the mainstream spotlight, and earned her two Grammy nominations and was certified double platinum. She was also featured on Dierks Bentley’s Grammy-nominated No. 1 Country Airplay hit “Different For Girls” (she performed it with Bentley at the CMA Awards and took home an award for “Musical Event of the Year”). King also performed for President Obama in honor of Mavis Staples at the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors.

There is a 6 ticket limit per household.

Disney's NEWSIES
Wednesday, July 17, 2019, 7:30pm
Thursday, July 18, 2019, 7:30pm

Presented by Theatre Royale

Disney’s Newsies, based on the 1992 motion picture, features a score by eight-time Academy Award® winner Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by four-time Tony Award® winner Harvey Fierstein. Newsies is inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, when newsboy Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway “newsies” on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst, and other powerful newspaper publishers. Timely and fresh, the fictionalized adaptation of Newsies addresses age-old themes of social injustice, exploitative labor practices, and David-versus-Goliath struggles as the young learn to harness their power against a corrupt establishment. High-energy with non-stop thrills, the stage version introduces eight brand-new songs by the original team of Menken and Feldman while keeping many of the beloved songs from the film, including “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” “King of New York,” and “Santa Fe.”
